Getting started, open mics and unpaid gigs
You need to play live to build a following. Not just to reach more people, but to hone your craft and to see how people react to your music. But where to start? There's a lot of consternation in the industry about playing for free, but when you're just starting out, don't worry too much about it. Hit the open mic circuit and grab any gigs you can. Once you're confident in your craft, then it's time to make sure you get paid for your work.
