Becoming local heroes and booking tours
It all starts locally. Your first fans will be your mates, and then their mates and so on. As well as becoming known in your home town, getting out to nearby towns and cities and give you greater license to experiment. The next step is touring. You can start by planning your own tours, and graduate to getting a booking agent. Key to all of this is maintaining positive relationships with other bands. They'll give you tips about venues, and invite you to support on their tours.
